The diluted water suddenly became frigid. It was as if a legion of tiny, invisible sea creatures were beating her hide with all the strength they possessed. Asphyxiation slowed, watching the scenery with appreciation. Glaciers, magnificent and resplendent in the sun, stood like ancient monoliths, guarding some god-forsaken secret in their icy depths. The she-whale glided past one, brushing against it ever so gently. A bone-numbing rumble sounded from above her. The orca frantically swam forward, breeching a few times. Behind her, enormous blocks of ice and snow cascaded down, eliciting huge waves. These ripples helped her in her quest of escape. Finally, shuddering from exertion, the killer whale brought herself to a stop, a good three hundred feet from the dangerous glaciers. "Daaamn."
It was all she could manage at the moment, so horror-struck that she had to rise and let her blow hole sit in the open air, drawing deep breaths. A sudden thought bloomed in her mind. What if that handsome whale saw? Panic burst through her veins, before she laughed at her own stupidity. The last time she had seen him, they were in the open ocean. What were the chances he would show up here? Slim to none, an inner voice assured her. She nodded to herself, before remembering the mental war she had been having with one such voice. Suspicion flitted in the shadows of her brain, but she shook it away, immersing herself in the chilly water once more. She could see the ice. After sinking a hundred or so feet from the force of its impact, the frozen water had started to drift back up again. Asphyxiation darted forward with a grace and speed that was at odds with her bulk.
She was dancing with the ice. To dance was to take a series of steps in time with some form of music. The music here was the beating of Fissy's heart, and her partner was the ice. Their dance was slow, leisurely. A small, genuine smile had split the she-whale's face. Though the water around her remained as cold as ever, a certain warmth had knotted itself in her heart, and it slowly spread through her veins, distributing the good feeling all around. She weaved in and out of the bits of ice, never touching, but never more than a few inches away. Finally, the ice reached the surface, and there it bobbed, like ducks in a pond. The killer whale breached once, soaring high enough to land on a particularly wide, flat chunk of ice. She remained there for a moment, and then the ice began to lean side-ways. With no regret, she slipped back into the ocean, heat still blooming in her blood.
Then, she recalled her purpose. The Regina of the Dissenters. She was on patrol, supposedly scanning these waters with a watchful eye. "Yeah, right." She muttered to herself. How could they expect her to do this? She was the queen. Why was she lowering herself to this dirty work? The answer came immediately, and accompanied by a small rush of fondness for her fellow Dissenters. They know I'm the best. That was the reason. She was violent when it came to fighting, unforgiving in revenge, and yet she could be charming and persuasive if she pleased. This rush of fondness was gone as quickly as it came. She was still Regina. She should be lounging around, or planning attacks on the Creeds, or even consulting the Disciples. And again, she realized that she needed to do the work of an everyday Dissenter to earn any respect from her pod.
She gave a minute sigh and swam on, deep, chocolate eyes watchful and wary of any passerby.
