Small waves slid across the sand’s surface and peacefully rolled back into the ocean. A soft ocean breeze blew under the bright morning sun while seagulls squawked and effortlessly soared through the sky, cautiously watching for movement below the aqua blue surface. It was another typical day by the beach. What may seem so peaceful to others, it wasn’t so for a new ocean arrival.
A pair of large blue eyes flashed back and forth between the several angry faces that believed it would be right to return an orca back to its natural habitat, even after ten years. Why did all these mean people have to come back? Kailani thought to herself. The female killer whale inhaled for a new breath of clean air while being lowered a few inches more to free waters.
Kailani whined as she looked out onto the horizon. This wasn’t even her home. Who really knew what was out there? The orca’s pectoral flippers wriggled back and forth as she began to enter the cool water. The two leggeds surrounded her when her entire body was submersed in the shallow water. Kailani slapped her large flukes against the surface as the humans began touching her smooth skin. She enjoyed being touched, but not by these people; especially after how they treated her, her captive family, and what they are doing to her now. Out of fear, the humans stepped away from the female.
Nets and long paddles were taken out and given to the humans surrounding Kailani. The people began violently slapping the paddles against the water, trying to scare away the young whale. Now was the time for Kailani to take off and never look back onto the human species. Without hesitation, she took this moment to flee. As sad and angry as she was, she was actually happy to be free and on her own.
The large black body glided through the sun’s water rays and kept her mind focused on the horizon she looked upon earlier that day. She had to get there; it was the point to where she would begin her new life. Yet, she still doesn’t know the dangers of this new watery world.
